POSITION SUMMARY:

The Finance Manager acts as an expert in Finance area by providing value-added services to

the Tokyo practice.

The role is responsible for the oversight of the financial operations of the Tokyo business as well

as the supervision of the Finance Team members who are experienced, qualified and highly

effective finance professionals based in Tokyo.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Finance Manager is expected to be heavily engaged with various stakeholders (i.e. Tokyo

Partner and Manager group, Tokyo department managers, Global/Regional finance

counterparts in Boston and other Asia Pac countries, Legal, HR) and work concurrently with the

Senior Director on the following aspects;

 Financial Planning and Analysis:

o Support the Senior Director in Finance, develop and manage the annual planning

process (including 3 Year Plan and Forecast)

o Work closely with Cost Center/Case Managers on generating their Plans and

performing regular cost review to ensure financial objectives are met

o Monitor performance against plan through proactive oversight and

communication. Preparation of monthly variance analysis for submission to

FP&A.

o Budget inputs into the system and preparation of management reports

o Send case billable and cost center detail reports to case and cost center

managers for review

o Support the Senior Director in Finance in regular & ad-hoc business reporting

(e.g. tracking of metrics and preparation of Partner/LT Meeting decks).

 Pipeline, Pricing & Revenue Management

o Support the Senior Director in Finance, review pricing and commercial terms of

client engagement (e.g. supporting requests for proposals, MSAs, NDAs, pricing

negotiations, case team pricing and letter of engagement development, bill rates

review)

o Oversee the revenue analyst, ensure timely pipeline management and proper

recognition of revenue and timely, accurate revenue reporting.

o Assist case management with pricing and Price Realization questions, engaging

regularly with staffing

o Oversee the recording and invoicing of revenue, receivables management and

collection

o Work closely with other Bain offices on revenue transfers

 Payroll, Financial Accounting, Tax, Treasury & Compliance

o Understand Bain accounting policies and process to effectively oversee the

monthly and year-end closing activities (financial and management aspects) of

the entire team, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of submissions.

o Manage the chargeback close process: ensure accurate and timely entry from

each department; generate, verify and enter chargebacks into T&E-Audit system.

o Review payroll, including having a deep understanding of payroll operations,

implications on the P&L and reviewing of data prepared by the Accountant in

charge

o Ensure local entities comply with all local regulatory authorities and corporate

policies (e.g. annual tax return, consumption tax, payroll reporting, external

financial and tax audit etc.), through comprehensive knowledge of local office

financial position, local accounting rules and regulations

o Preparation of the Tax Return of the Tokyo business working with Global Tax

and External Advisors – corporate tax, business tax, consumption tax.

o Pro-active support of regional and global functions and timely responses to

regional/global requests for information e.g. revenue forecast, cash flow

reporting, monthly variance analysis and year-end reporting

o Ensure the Headcount reporting system is up to date, accurately reflects actual

office headcount, and prepare data and analyses as necessary. Liaise with HR

and Senior Director in Finance to ensure Headcount assumptions and pyramid

shape reporting and projections are in line with Plan

o Establish and manage strong business relationships with Bain’s bank, insurance

broker and external tax/audit advisors

o Monitoring bank balance and communicate with headquarters on the fund

repatriation

o Support the Senior Director in Finance in ad-hoc queries, projects and other

business initiatives including the development of new programs/policies.

 Team

o Overall joint accountability and leadership of the Tokyo finance team with the

Senior Director in Finance

o Working with the Senior Director in Finance on the following:

o Support Senior Director on the effective motivation, retention, coaching

and inspirational leadership of the team;

o Support for individual skill growth and development of team to full

potential; and

o Preparation of performance reviews, short and long term development

plans

o Organize regular team meetings

o Supervise RFC person in charge jointly with the RFC team leader & manager

o Work with APAC and Global Finance teams, actively participating in group

discussions, meetings and projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance, advanced degree or public accounting

experience preferred

 5-8 years post educational experience in Finance/Accounting of which 3years includes

corporate Financial Planning and Analysis responsibilities

 CPA/CA qualification preferred but not essential

 Audit experience/exposure preferred but not essential

 Experience in a high results focused culture, preferably within a professional services firm

 Knowledge of data base accounting systems as well as project costing and PC based

systems

 Proven analytic comfort and ability

 Strong communication (both English and Japanese), interpersonal and problem-solving

skills

 Self-motivated and capable of working independently
