A giant in global luxury retail is looking for an Accounting Manager with strong GL experience to join its Shibuya Shared Service Centre as GL Accounting Manager.

This person will manage a team of 10 staff and play an important part in an SAP implementation starting next year.

This is an excellent chance for someone with a strong accounting background to take the next step in their management career.

Native-level Japanese is essential for this position.


The GL Manager will have a key role in:

  • Recruiting new personnel to GL Team, training and coaching
  • Setting objectives for GL, performance appraisal and agreeing on staff personal development plans
  • Meeting SPA targets and proposing changes
  • Designing detailed GL process, in cooperation with Brand Finance managers and other departments
  • Conducting continuous improvement of processes and sharing best practices
  • Testing and implementing any IT projects related to GL process
  • Participating in the implementation of GL processes before the SSC goes live


Within the GL Team, the GL Manager will:

  • Monitor month-end closing activities in an effective and timely manner
  • Coordinate and monitor day-to-day operations
  • Ensure good performance against KPIs related to GL
  • Plan, organize and define roles for GL staff to ensure that customer service expectations are met or exceeded


Day to day responsibilities of GL Manager:

  • Maintain chart of accounts in the Accounting system
  • Organize closing work and coordinate with other departments in conformity with closing calendar
  • Supervise closing activities in an efficient and timely manner
  • Manage relations with government authorities in close collaboration with Tax Manager
  • Answer inquiries from Brand Finance Managers
  • Direct the preparation of financial reporting to ensure completeness, accuracy, timeliness, accessibility and consistency to company corporate policies, GAAP and local policies
  • Provide support to the stores
  • Liaise with auditors for statutory and corporate requirements


Experience and Business/Technical Skill Requirements:

  • 10 to 15 years of experience, including 5 years leadership experience in the general accounting function or in a similar environment (prior experience in a SSC is an advantage)
  • Bachelor’s degree (in Accounting is an advantage)
  • Nissho Boki Grade 2 or USCPA is an advantage
  • General knowledge of processes within Finance Function and good understanding of General Accounting function
  • Process knowledge associated with an ERP-application (SAP is an advantage)
  • Knowledge of JGAAP and IFRS accounting rules
  • Native-level Japanese, Business-level English
