Job Description

Position Summary:  Under general direction, plans, organizes and manages the organization’s training and development programs and retention activities.  Conducts research and needs assessments to identify training requirements and needs throughout the company.  Designs, develops and delivers orientation and training programs for employees at all levels of the organization.  Oversees employee communication efforts

Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Works with executive team and line managers to develop training curriculum and schedules.  Develops training course content, materials and delivery mechanisms to accomplish training goals and objectives such as leadership development, supervisory training, guest services, group process, and skills training.  Develops or adapts own programs and/or contracts for external resources and materials to create leading edge training programs and presentations.
  • Writes, implements and communicates training policies, procedures, forms, and systems to effectively track and manage training activities.  Develops criteria and evaluation systems to measure, analyze and communicate training effectiveness.  Ensures training program enrollments are met. Continually improves the quality and efficacy of training programs and systems.
  • Serve as the company technical expert and resource for training and development activities. Provides technical guidance and counsel to management throughout the company regarding training and development approaches. Jointly identifies and develops key individuals throughout the organization to act as subject matter experts and specialized department trainers. Provides ongoing support to line managers and staff to assist in developing training programs, materials, delivery approaches, and activities that encourage interactive learning.
  • Designs, develops and implements introduction, orientation and placement programs for new employees and other groups to share company mission, vision and values, provide product education, communicate important aspects of employment, and create excitement and enthusiasm. Works closely with line managers to transition employees to successfully assume job duties and responsibilities. Works with line managers to identify first day/week/month/quarter learning goals and expectations.  Develops meaningful ways to successfully transition employees.
  • Serves as an internal resource for accomplishing organizational development objectives such as achieving and rewarding high performance, developing teams and team process, facilitating communication and problem solving, etc. Works closely with Director of Human Resources to refine organizational needs, and develop strategies to build the culture and accomplish organizational change.
  • In concert with the executive team and line managers, develops and oversees organization-centered career development activities that are in alignment with the organization’s needs and objectives.  Supports a learning organization with a focus on skills and jobs, constructing career paths that provide for logical progression of people between jobs in the company. Creates skills assessment and development tools to provide employees and supervisors with feedback and action plans to meet development needs, closing skill gaps, aiding in selection and promotion decisions, building talent within the organization, and supporting succession planning.
  • Supports organization, department and individual performance requirements by developing individual growth and development tools. Works one-on-one with line managers and employees to provide coaching and assistance with individual growth and development plans. Helps identify and coordinate in-house and external resources for employee development.
  • Serves as a member of the Human Resources team to contribute to overall effectiveness of the Human Resources function.  Contributes to department direction, strategy, programs, and activities to identify and meet the Human Resources needs of the organization.  Serves as an active and participatory team member, promoting and demonstrating company culture and core values through corresponding behavior and actions.  Assists all other HR functions, but particularly the staffing function on an as-needed basis for outreach, job fairs, interviewing of nonexempt and exempt staff, and other activities.
  • Oversees development opportunities such as training and development library, orientation leader program, resume building resources, etc.  
  • Provides development, supervision and direction to the Training and Retention Coordinator.  Provides oversight and direction of employee communication, retention and activities programs including service and recognition awards.  Ensures that effective programs are developed and delivered on time within budgetary frames.

Background and Experience:

  • Requires at least eight years of progressive experience in Human Resources, with a specialization in training and development.
  • Requires a track record of success in designing, developing, and delivering training programs that meet organizational objectives.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of training techniques, methods, approaches, theories, programs, and materials.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated experience in partnering with line managers to define and develop training programs, securing buy-in, ownership and support.
  • Must have experience with “train the trainer” programs and conducting training programs at all levels in the organization (management, supervision and line employees) in a variety of content areas.
  •  Requires at least three years of supervisory experience with significant leadership and program management responsibility.
  • Ability to set and manage against objectives and schedules, and effectively coordinate and manage internal and external and resources.
  • Ability to utilize sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Requires demonstrated skill in interpersonal relationships, platform training, making presentations, negotiations, and excellent verbal and written communications.
  • Strong team building, group facilitation, process improvement, and project management skills required.
  • Computer proficiency with ability to use Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.   


A bachelor’s degree in psychology, organization development, human resources, management or closely related field (or equivalent education and experience) is required.  A human resources management certificate or designation as a PHR or SPHR is helpful.  A master’s degree in business or closely related field is preferred.

  • Must be fluent in Japanese, including all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • Must have passable reading and speaking English skills. TOEIC Score of 800+ or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends to support operations.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and be willing to utilize own vehicle for business purposes.
  • Knowledge and application of the company Compliance rules.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and practices.
  • Available to travel Japan wide.
