Job Description

Our research team at Ascent focuses on machine learning including but not limited to deep neural models, reinforcement learning algorithms and biologically inspired models, with the goal of building general purpose learning algorithms for robotic systems. Our engineering team creates and maintains machine learning platforms, develops software (robotics control, 3D simulation, data analysis, internal tools, etc.) and creates our robotic platforms. As a Research Engineer, you'll have the best of this two worlds and you will also have expensive hardware to experiment with, including high-end Nvidia GPUs, HoloLenses and an array of sensors across all modalities.



  • Provide software design and programming support to research projects
  • Report and present software development including status and results clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing
  • Participate in research, internal R&D. Participate in writing publications and patents.
  • Implement, evaluate and report on algorithms, research papers and studies



Minimum Qualifications

  • MS/MEng degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, machine learning or equivalent
  • Expert in C/C++
  • Experienced in at least one scripting language such as Lua, Python or Matlab and a desire to learn new programming languages
  • Familiarity with software collaboration tools (git, Jira, etc.)
  • Experience with implementing numerical methods and data visualization
  • Good knowledge of algorithm design and ability to interpret research papers
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Knowledge of modern machine learning and/or statistics tools, libraries and software

Plus points for any of the following

  • Experience with GPU Programming (CUDA, OpenCL)
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (such as high-end Nvidia devices, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with modern machine learning software and tools (such as Tensorflow, Caffe, Kubernetes, Docker, Chainer, Ansible, Logstash, etc.)
  • Interest in neuroscience and robotics
  • Published papers or conference talks in relevant fields
  • Passion for AI
  • Contributions to open source projects
  • Japanese communication skills
  • 5+ years of experience
